The Biden administration’s open border policies created chaos across the country, but nowhere was it more devastating than in Massachusetts.

Governor Maura Healey’s sanctuary state policies turned what should have been temporary emergency shelters into permanent warehouses for illegal immigrants.

But the real story of what happened inside those shelters has been carefully hidden from taxpayers who were forced to foot the bill.

Until now.

Jon Fetherston ran a converted Holiday Inn in Marlborough that served as an emergency shelter from November 2023 through July 2024.

The horrific conditions he discovered during those eight months finally drove him to speak out.

This past Saturday, Fetherston fired off a explosive letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding federal investigators probe Healey’s shelter operation.

Fetherston labeled Healey’s program "dangerous and corrupt" in his letter, demanding that Bondi launch an immediate federal probe into what he called "a disturbing pattern of criminal activity, sexual assaults, financial abuse, and the widespread use of no-bid contracts."

The revelations from inside Massachusetts’ migrant shelters paint a picture of a system that failed everyone it was supposed to protect.

Sexual assault victims ignored while criminals roam free

The most shocking allegations from Fetherston’s whistleblower complaint involve the sexual assault of women and children inside state-run shelters.

According to Fetherston’s account, one case involved a father at the shelter who was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing his minor daughter, leading to her pregnancy.

That shocking incident wasn’t an isolated case, Fetherston revealed.

"I am aware of other women and girls who were assaulted in shelters that had no adequate safeguards, supervision, or response protocols," he wrote to Bondi.

"To this day, no one has been held accountable," Fetherston stated.

The shelter system supposedly had background checks in place to prevent dangerous individuals from being housed with families and children.

Governor Healey repeatedly claimed that illegal aliens underwent proper screening before entering state-run facilities.

But Fetherston exposed that as a complete lie.

Despite Healey’s public assurances, criminals and illegal aliens with active deportation orders were "knowingly placed in family shelters alongside children and vulnerable residents."

"The governor claimed that all migrants were run through the Massachusetts [Criminal Offender Record Information] system," Fetherston said. "That was a blatant falsehood."

Even worse, Healey later claimed she had directed her staff to conduct proper background checks but "produced no documentation to prove it, and no one on her staff was held accountable."

The background check system Healey relied on was completely useless for screening migrants from other countries since it only revealed crimes committed in Massachusetts.

"This was simply more gaslighting from the governor," Fetherston concluded.

Taxpayer money stolen while bureaucrats look the other way

The criminal activity inside the shelters was matched by widespread fraud that bilked taxpayers out of millions of dollars.

Fetherston described the financial abuse he witnessed as "staggering and frankly insulting to taxpayers."

Vendors were billing the state for services they never provided while government contracts were awarded without any oversight.

Shelter staff treated their jobs like paid vacation time, clocking in for work and then leaving the facility.

They used hotel rooms for personal purposes, charged personal ride-share services to the shelter’s account, and even brought their personal laundry for shelter vendors to wash.

Staff members went so far as to advise illegal aliens on how to manipulate the immigration system to their advantage.

"The system is bloated with bureaucracy and lacks meaningful financial accountability," Fetherston said.

His allegations were backed up by an official state audit released in May by Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio’s Office.

The audit found that the state’s Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities "failed to adequately assess and act upon the increased demand for shelter services, resulting in improper and unlawful no-bid emergency procurements for food and transportation services."

The report revealed a "lack of fairness," "transparency," and "accountability" in the state’s contracting process that resulted in "unnecessarily high costs and inefficiencies."

Whistleblower faces retaliation for speaking out

Fetherston’s efforts to expose the truth about Massachusetts’ migrant shelters came at a personal cost.

He told Blaze News that he faced "direct retaliation" from state officials who consistently ignored his concerns about safety and financial mismanagement.

When Fetherston tried to save taxpayer money by announcing that residents with EBT and WIC benefits would no longer receive duplicate taxpayer-funded diapers, wipes, and formula through the shelter, one resident allegedly crashed a vehicle into his office in retaliation.

State officials did nothing to protect Fetherston or address the dangerous situation he was trying to fix.

Instead, they punished him for trying to do his job and protect both residents and taxpayers.

Fetherston asked the DOJ to investigate "criminal activity and sexual violence within Massachusetts-run migrant shelters," "widespread fraud and misuse of federal and state funds," "the deliberate refusal to coordinate with federal law enforcement agencies," and "the pattern of retaliation against those reporting abuse, danger, or misconduct."

"Taxpayers have every right to demand transparency and results," Fetherston told Blaze News. "That begins with full independent audits, strong whistleblower protections, thorough investigations, and a comprehensive overhaul of procurement and oversight processes."

The Massachusetts migrant shelter scandal shows what happens when radical Democrats prioritize political ideology over public safety and fiscal responsibility.

Governor Healey turned her state into a sanctuary for criminals while taxpayers were forced to pay for the disaster.
