Another Year Old
Almost forgot it was my birthday
Well who cares anyway
When you realize this it’s okay
Just another face in a population survey,
Used to be a special time as a kid
The cake, the present, a special day God forbid
No way to go back the milk has been spilled
At that point in time I was thrilled,
Still to this very day, some adults take off all day
I never thought it was that big a deal, okay?
There were other priorities come what may,
A business to run and kids to feed, what you say, what you say?
These days there are more serious things to ponder
Sometimes I wonder will my spirit forever wander
Never had the luxury to squander
Will my soul end up in the wild blue yonder?
You begin to realize you’re not so important anymore
As reality continues to knock at the door
Maybe another piece of life’s puzzle to explore
One more love of my life to adore?
The candles in a darkened room
Chasing away the momentary gloom
Mom and Dad working hard while I assume
A birthday barely noticed that looms,
Aw, but we are entitled to nothing I was told
So here I sit alone and cold
The reminder of being another year old
Childhood’s wonderment as good as gold,
A bag of toy soldiers or maybe a kite
Too excited to sleep that night
A fluffy chocolate cake by candle light
And just for a short time the world seemed alright.
