15:13 The BBC is reporting claims that the grenades were dropped from rooftops by a man in his 40s.
15:07 De Standaard, another Belgian paper, initially reported that the attack might be linked to an escape from the Liege Palace of Justice, however, it later clarified that this was not the case. It is not clear if any such escape attempt was opportunistic or actually took place at all.
14:54 Several sources are being quoted, including the mayor of Liege, Willy Demeyer, claiming the violence was down to an attempted escape from the nearby courthouse. Andre Meekes tweeted:
Apparently it was an escape from the court in Liege, is this the world we live in......

14:41 Lots of rumours are beginning to swirl around. We'll try to sift them as we continue to report on this rolling story. However, one report has a two-year-old seriously injured.
14:38 Latest reports from the ground suggest that the total number of deaths has risen to four. It is not clear if an injured person has succumbed to their wounds or whether police are continuing to find new victims as they clear the area.
14:25 More from Le Soir - they've dug into their archive and found an article from three years ago in which Amrani, then aged 29 and from Liege, was sentenced to just under five years for possession of 12 guns and growing 2,800 cannabis plants. He was also fined 11,000 Euros and had another 76,500 Euros confiscated.

There is at least one dead and the attacker. Police are looking for another shooter. There are lots of ambulances and many casualties - at least 10 people.
At the moment you can't move in the city centre. People are crying and in shock - they do not know what is going on. Everyone has been told to stay inside and are hiding in shops.
13.55 The attack took place around noon local time on Saint Lambert Square, home to the town's courthouse and located near a busyChristmas market, according to reports.
A two-year-old child is reportedly fighting for life in hospital after one of two or more assailants threw stun grenades into the courthouse while another was hurled at a bus shelter.
Shots were fired across the square by gunmen posted on the rooftop of a bakery shop, with further shots heard later from across town.
