Brits seem gun ho at wanting to rush up on their defence 'contribution' spending. They should check up on the the quality of the defence first.

@cheeki kea

The Brits have been ahead in many military developments by decades, but any projects that would have upset the balance of power in the faux 'Cold War' were intentionally scuppered.

i.e The BAC TSR-2 strike and recon aircraft (scuppered by the Harold Wilson Labour Govt) and the original Enfield 7.1mm / .280 weapons program (scuppered by Conservative Winston Churchill - he felt that NATO standard was more important - the 7.62 NATO round itself was pushed by the zealous US Army Colonel Renée Studler, head of the US Small Arms Bureau of Ordnance - who was opposed to everything the British program stood for.

Studler stated on record that, any non-American design was "a waste of time", he refused point blank to accept any "foreign" design and had gone so far as to bury reports from Aberdeen Proving Ground that suggested the .280 was superior in US testing.)

Funny that in recent times, descendants of the 7.1mm / .280 type rounds are regarded as the 'way to go' in modern small arms development.

The UK (and maybe other Western nations) would have been ahead with .280mm and the EM-2 and Taden small arms series.

A joke really, when not that much later the US adopted an intermediate cartridge in the form of the 5.56×45mm NATO - which amounted to Earle Harvey at Springfield Armory taking an off the shelf varmint hunting cartridge in the form of the .222 Remington, and lengthening the case for Gene Stoner's AR15 program.

Instead substandard projects that drain money and resources are pushed - i.e Enfield IW program (L85 weapons system - which in the end had to be rectified by H&K)

The US has followed this model with the F-35 program (billions over budget), the Army's UCP (universal camouflage pattern) uniform and equipment (when the Army had already developed and owned both the Desert Brush and Scorpion camouflage patterns - the latter being the mother of the Multicam pattern which is now a global standard - how many US military personnel have been killed or injured as a result of that lurid UCP ensemble? Or was that the intention given its post 9/11 introduction?)

They have to buy up on 'defence' because if it was called what it really was, say something like The royal war force, - might not look to flash.

I'll never understand why all aggressors have defense forces instead of war forces.

What the fuck does the UK need with nuclear weapons?

The enemy has been embedded in both the UK establishment and Govt for centuries and opened the gates to the invading enrichment hordes over 40 years ago.

Yet more weapons, that never function properly, along with the illegal wars that must be fought and weapons (that do function properly for foreign) sales* that are used to drain the pockets of the British people.

*Not really sales since any monies disappear into the pockets of the politicians and arms manufacturers, and the British taxpayer foots the bill.
