British spies can go through Americans' telephone calls and emails without a warrant, reveals legal challenge in the UK --Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) privileged agreement with National Security Agency revealed 29 Oct 2014 British spies can help themselves to data collected by the NSA from the telephone calls and Internet communications of Americans without a warrant, a new court document shows. The agreement between the NSA and its British equivalent, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) means that American citizen's data can be seen and stored by the United States' closest ally without a warrant when that is 'not technically feasible'. Anything discovered in the data, once obtained, can be kept by the British for up to two years and specifically relates to 'unselected' or raw data. But, this deadline can be extended unilaterally by 'senior UK officials' if they believe it to be necessary for national security purposes.http://www.legitgov.org/#breaking_news

This is nothing new.
RAF Menwith Hill, near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England is a joint UK/US base that the been the primary monitoring station of the NSA since the 1960s.
GCHQ (Signals Intelligence Services) has stations based in Cheltenham, Glouchester and Bude, Cornwall formerly called GCHQ Composite Signals Organisation Station Morwenstow. They also maintain a base on Ascension Island, while the British military operate a monitoring station on behalf of GCHQ at Ayios Nikolaos, at the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia on the island of Cyprus. Scarborough, North Yorkshire is home to a satellite ground station.
In order to get round those pesky laws that supposedly protect the rights and privacy of the peons of both the USA and United Kingdom, the US spies on the UK, and the UK spies on the US and then information is shared and exchanged. GCHQ employees work at Menwith Hill, and Menwith Hill staff have a prescence at Cheltenham.
Similar agreements are in place with the other nations of the Anglosphere (US/UK/Canada/Australia/New Zealand) - the so called Five Eyes electronic eavesdropping alliance.
No doubt, there are similar relationships with the intelligence services of other allies.
