But a Sliver
You were fine in your time
Like an excellent bottle of wine
You could be troublesome and yet sublime
Passionate but not divine,
You were a rare breed it seemed
Interesting but not quite clean
Still you invaded my dreams
You could make a man scream,
Out of the darkness you passed in the night
Blinding all from within my sight
Not prepared to be a guiding light
Couldn’t have resisted with all my might,
Into my world you came
And things would never be the same
Remembering your slender frame
A mixture of nirvana and shame,
Like a fiery comet burning bright
Such sensations you could ignite
Did pain overshadow delight?
Wondering what did I do to invite?
You wanted to attract the world to you
Putting everything else askew
All the pain before that you knew
Exposing this non-existent virtue,
Now reality is but a sliver
As the ghosts emerge from the river
The cruel heart that refuses to deliver
Wet and cold I’m starting to shiver.
