A powerful Pacific storm is poised to slam into California on Tuesday, which forecasters say will bring with it a threat of flash floods and mudslides in communities near recent wildfire burn areas.
"We're expecting an unseasonably strong storm" on Tuesday and Wednesday, said meteorologist David Sweet of the National Weather Service in Oxnard, Calif.
Sweet said that the heavy rain could trigger dangerous mud and debris flows. Of particular concern are the neighborhoods below the slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, where 250 square miles of the Angeles National Forest were scorched in the Station Fire in August and September.
A recent U.S. Geological Survey report warned of an 80% likelihood that fall and winter rainstorms would trigger mudslides in these areas.
Sandbags and concrete barriers called K-rail have been stationed on streets to try to direct any flows of mud and debris away from homes.
Total rainfall amounts in the Los Angeles area are forecast at 1 to 3 inches in the lowlands and 2 to 4 inches at higher elevations, said Sweet.
Central and northern California will also get hit by the storm. According to Weather Channel lead meteorologist Kevin Roth, 2 to 6 inches of rain are likely there, with high-elevation amounts of more than 8 inches possible. He said the heaviest rain should fall along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Wind gusts of more than 60 mph will add to the misery, said Roth, especially along the coast
