There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear.
So let me point it out and make it clear. The US federal deficit and state deficits are a political hot potato and the truth behind them may not be readily apparent to some of you. Admittedly I won't provide any answers and in fact this won't be an in-depth study either, just some bare facts that we'll all be facing or at the very least many of us.
Social Services are going to undergo a dramatic cut at all levels.
This doesn't just mean that Aunt Milly will be allotted fewer catheters either.
The Post Office will soon cease delivering mail on Saturday. Some states will be cutting Medicaid drug benefits. For example where one is now allotted 10 prescriptions monthly for 10 different drugs that may be reduced to 3 drugs total. Some states will be severely curtailing benefits for the disabled and others will be eliminating benefits entirely. Library hours will be reduced and some have already been reduced. Senior services will be reduced and in some cases cut entirely.
Right now, at this very moment, the South Carolina legislature is considering cutting all benefits for its 23,000 disabled citizens. That spells disaster for family members devoted to caring for the needs of other family members with serious disabilities. Only one example cited, that of a woman with an adult daughter with Spina Bifida and confined to a wheel chair will lose in home care, substantially cheaper then nursing home care, and will no longer be able to work since her daughter can't be allowed to remain home alone for 8 hours a day. If her adult child slipped and fell who would call for help?
The cutting of Social Services is a standard used by the IMF when they implement their Austerity Program to create revenue to pay back loan money given to Third World Countries. They also nationalize infrastructure like water and power delivery, sanitation and sewer collection and government owned resource extraction businesses. They lower wages and benefits. It stifles growth and it suffocates the people. It's the way we keep Third World countries from becoming competitive in the world market. It's called Capitalism but it's not really that. And it's criminal.
That's exactly what we can all expect during the coming several years as we try to climb out from under the mountain of debt we've accepted at the state and federal level. Ann and I collect Social Security. Our solitary concern and one that isn't grave is that we won't see an increase in benefits for a few years or more. We'll be fine.
For those of you expecting to retire comfortably in 10 or 20 years the picture looks decidedly grim. To begin with, the age of full retirement has been consistently moved forward by administrations that don't use Social Security since their personal wealth doesn't necessitate it. As we move forward it's very likely that the Social Security program will be revised and eliminated and private enterprise will take over the responsibility for retirement savings meaning the bankers will be able to extract profit at your expense, and they will.
The US is on track to slowly become a Third World country since we're one of the few countries left that has any wealth at all that bankers can still steal blind. The standard of living is being reduced, social services are being cut, infrastructure will be sold for money to pay debt and we will, as was said, become homeless on the continent we were born on.
I follow national politics closely. This is no joke. The trends are clear. Even if we're all safe and comfortable today and even if the future appears secure legislation can change any anticipated outcome and you can expect that legislation to be forthcoming. The next 20 years will cause most of us to become disabled even if we have no disease, we will still be dis-abled.
