Jay,
Apologize for the pause. Can we plan to catch up tomorrow by phone and discuss how we could implement a plan of action here. There is no doubt there’s significant value to unlock. I think the key item to address is
what are the costs (time & $s) and what are the potential options for
funding those costs. Late afternoon work?
Best,
Devon

Attached is something I have written up on Colombia. It goes through some of the rationale for investment there.
I can add to it based on what you guys say.
You know about the political side — we can meet with President,
Finance Minister, Energy and Mining. Here are some
other points to consider.
1) We have two possibilities for deal sourcing — Andreas Obregon
Santo Domingo, boutique investment bank
from a prominent family. Solomon Kassin — used to run Salomon
Brothers there he has his own shop he can help
source deals too
2) Three sectors to focus on possibly — Energy and Mining,
Agriculture or Infrastructure projects.
Mining we can talk to several players, same with infrastructure.
Agriculture we can talk to Cresud/Irsa
from Argentina they are looking for large tracks of land
3) Juan Orduz – is currently the Head of Colombia coffee growers. He is well connected across Colombia
especially with landowners and other monied interests. He is very
interested in working with us.
He already has some ideas about deals, is in New York and would like to meet with you guys.
He is available later this week or early next.
4) Ziv’s guy — are still interested in talking about opportunities
there.
5) Based on success there we could replicate this in emerging markets where we elect a President.
This issue though is, that while I have the political expertise,
connections
etc. I know you guys are focused on Real estate, but I have taken it
as far as I can and it now needs the financial work. If you guys
want to move forward with this let me know. if not, no harm no foul,
but I think I am going to punt and refocus on
my core business

– They mentioned wanting to meet organizations that may want to invest in their projects in Colombia, Costa Rica, etc. Given what were discussing today I think it may be in our best interest to first see which company we want to work with on financing initiatives, how we will be compensated, etc. At this stage we focus on the business development we signed up for so we do not get dilute ourselves, as working on financing initiatives can be a separate source of income. Good meeting and potentially good timing. They are in selection process to be mandated GP for Latin America/Caribbean fund being sponsored by IDB and China (think China Exim or development bank). IDB and China will put $500 mln, then they raise funds to bring to over $1 billion. They will find out after new year if they win. He’s planning a trip down to Brazil/Latin America week of Jan 16th. He
could meet a few people we suggest (i.e. Lacan, OAS, or other firms with projects). They will also look to raise money from pension funds down there so a partnership with a major player may be something they are interested in.
Macquarie has identified Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Peru as their Latin American targets.
If they don’t win the mandate from IDB and China, then they will do their own fund but that probably will push their start date back 1 year.
Felt it was a good meeting. Let’s talk at some point soon regarding potential ideas/strategy for next steps.

Samsung could be interested in resource deals (oil or mining). Deals can be structured with Korea government backing where the resource can then be leveraged to arrange cheap funding from the Korea government for additional projects in Colombia. Korea government is looking at these type of deals.
Should I talk with the local person from Harry’s office we are meeting about that also or is this something to discuss with Pastrana/Harry first?
FYI, ran into Jay in the hotel.
Will let you know how the meetings go down here.

还是先和Pastrana/Harry谈谈这个问题?
供你参考,我在酒店碰到杰了。
会让你知道这里的会议进行的如何。

All,
Hope the preparations for the start of the project you won in Colombia are going well.
When Harry gets back from vacation we think it would be great if you could meet in Bogota to discuss projects and next steps. Then we were thinking we could take a trip down there in September when most of the government/businesses will be back from vacation and have some meetings to move things forward on some of the projects.
Does that work on your end?
Best,
John

I think it is worth talking about although I might focus on Brazil and Argentina before Colombia. I think we got to get some traction with Harry on OAS before trying anything else there. Unless of course Jay can help but I don’t think mining is an area where he has expertise. Let’s discuss when we talk next.

Hope you both had a good weekend.
Been talking with one of the owners of a family business, infrastructure company. They have majority ownership in 3 different businesses/sectors (General Contracting, Infrastructure development, and equipment supply/services). They are a mid-size company, was told around $200 mln+ USDs per year of revenue.
We’re looking at partnering with them on construction projects in Africa.
However, a new business they entered into is as a distributor of engagement tools for mining (the replacement digging teeth used on mining equipment). They signed an exclusive distributor agreement in the Western Hemisphere with an Australian manufacturer of the equipment. The equipment is already in use by companies such as Rio Tinto in some Australian operations.
They will look to roll this out and we were talking about possibilities for us (meaning you guys and me) to help them in South America, and possibly US or other locations. The equipment they use apparently has a 48hr life, which is good for the industry. Sales potential for this equipment at one average size mine that’s in production if they win the contract is about $30 million USDs per year.
I said I would talk to you two to see if we think we may be able to help make relationships with the mining companies to generate sales in places like Colombia, Brazil, etc. I said would probably look at a consulting relationship (retainer and success fee) but did not talk numbers yet as I think we need to discuss first between us if we feel this is something we can take on.
What are your thoughts?
Best,
John
