The stores are now required to donate unwanted food to charities and food banks.

One thing that is really weird about supermarkets in France (although excluding Lidl ) is that they never reduce food items for sale, and would rather throw them in the garbage.
They also have a habit of dumping freshly arrived produce on top of older fruit and vegetables, which can be an unpleasant surprise when you find rotting produce underneath once the new stuff has gone.
A certain chain ...ahem ..."U"...are pretty bad when it comes to this.
