From Higher Ground
Trying to find something meaningful in my little world again
A whimsical exchange with a well-meaning friend?
A dance in the fantasy existence of pretend?
When there’s no love it seems that life virtually ends,
Crawling on my belly to the top of the ridge
Be careful of that land mine move over just a smidge
Lifting my binoculars I can see the bridge
While back at the ranch they get a beer from the fridge,
There’s ghosts out here on the perimeter
The morphine makes your speech slur
But, it kills the pain of those wounds, yes sir,
Seems my entire life has been in a blur,
Wondering which hill in life is worth dying on
So many times all options seemed gone
Or was it just the lack of sleep until dawn
Seems I never established trustworthy bonds,
When family and friends leave you so easily
Might as well be a turtle on its way to the sea
Perhaps a Seagull would eat me
Or I might just make it to the water to be free,
So God looked down from higher ground
From where there came an emanating sound?
First all the answers appeared then couldn’t be found
Then all hopes for human wisdom simply drowned.
