Ginger effectively relieves even severe muscle pain, new research shows

(NaturalNews) Forget the aspirin and Big Pharma pills for your muscle pain. According to a new study just reported in the Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society, daily doses of raw or heat-treated ginger effectively relieve muscle aches and discomfort -- and that includes even severe pain following strenuous exercise.

For centuries, ginger has been used by practitioners of Chinese medicine and by traditional Indian and Japanese healers to treat a host of conditions including vomiting and nausea, chronic coughs, morning sickness, gastrointestinal complaints and migraine headaches. It has also been used to treat both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. However, Western medicine has only recently started to seriously study the medicinal qualities of ginger.

So far, several studies have shown that ginger appears to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but without the side effects (which can include gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers). In one study, taking a daily dose of ginger (30 to 500 mg.) for four to 36 weeks successfully reduced knee pain in people suffering from osteoarthritis.

Now, in new research from the University of Georgia and Georgia College and State University (GCSU), scientists have found even more evidence that ginger is a potent muscle pain reliever. The scientists worked with seventy-four student volunteers who were divided into three groups. One group was given raw ginger, one group received heated ginger and the third group received a fake ginger placebo.

Muscle pain was induced in the volunteers by having them perform 18 eccentric muscle exercises. Then the research subjects were tested on 11 consecutive days to see if those taking the ginger had reduced muscle aches and pains. And they did -- dramatically. The results showed that both raw and heat-treated ginger lowered muscle pain intensity by 25 and 23 percent, respectively.

More breaking ginger news: in a study just reported in the journal Pediatric Blood and Cancer, researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi have documented that ginger significantly reduced nausea and vomiting in children subjected to chemotherapy for cancer. In addition, new research published this month in the journal Molecular Vision suggests ginger may prevent or delay the development of cataracts in diabetics.

Heh, as much as I love getting my ego polished, I'm afraid I can't take credit for this idea. The fact that we even have these thousands of varieties of heirloom genetics is the result of generations of gardeners and farmers saving their very best seed and sharing it with neighbors. Yeah, and I wanted to have a busy little crisis community going by now here in the mountains, but that's going to have to wait til everyone realizes that "Happy Motoring" and weekends at the Mall are things of the past. Oh well, ya play the hand yer dealt. Definitely look into container gardening right where you are. There are people in California who are generating five figures a year from a quarter acre yard by selling year round to restaurants. Modern organic gardening has made some startling advances in the past twenty years. Google "Square Foot Gardening." Anything you grow and eat yourself frees up the cash you would have spent on it at the supermarket for something else.

Awesome! you are one smart cookie! I agree, preserving the traditional/heirloom seeds are very important. I try to choose those when buying them. I am stocking back some good bagged soil every chance I get. I buy organic lettuce in plastic tubs and save them to start my seeds. I wanted to be moved to the mountains before the shtf, but it doesnt look like I'll make it, but am thinking along the lines of growing in containers if I have to.

"Absolutely! I have been buying non-gmo seeds and will be worth much when folks figure out they have to grow their food."

Very smart! But I may have gone you one better. Of course I live in a rural area so this option was available. I share my best open pollination seed, which has the advantage of being very well acclimated to the regional growing conditions, with other gardeners around me. My only requirement is that they share openly with others as I have. I make a record of who has what and it would take a nuke to wipe out my "seed bank." the toughest problem is finding gardeners who understand the importance of preserving traditional varieties.

Absolutely! I have been buying non-gmo seeds from www.genericseeds.com, they are cheap and will be worth much when folks figure out they have to grow their food.

Me too, the Internet is awash with this kind of info. I am pleased that you brought the subject up. On a site dedicated to the ideological evisceration of the New World Order I would have thought the question of food and medicine would be a burning topic. We have been sold on industrial food and medicine and it is making us sick in record numbers. The solution of course is obvious, cheap, and immediately available, but somehow not on the table. We have to learn again how to produce our own food and medicine locally. There is no other way. And the sooner we start the better for all. The first step will be to wake up from the lies we have been told.

Right on Snardly, I have a great sites I go to for herbal plant info.

There is an extensive herbal pharmacopea which we have ignored too long. Ginger, Mint, Garlic, Cabbage, lemon juice, apple cider, Plantain, and Comfrey. Simple universally available remedies that in most cases would make it unnecessary to go to the Doctor.
