Give Me Sanctuary
Conversations with God at midnight
Over the atrocities of mankind beneath the starlight
Holding me as close as an invisible ghost
Shielding from those insecurities I dread the most,
Yet, it seems this night wounds time
Without an intervention so divine
Like telling my soldiers to hold the line
As tensions in our society climb,
Give me sanctuary from all I can’t control
Give me one good reason to save my soul
All the self-recrimination has taken its toll
Perhaps I’ve been playing the wrong role,
Reciting from the book of dreams
Of mice and men and their flawed schemes
Baby I know you’re coming apart at the seams
Insanity has brought them to extremes,
Somewhere there’s got to be a sacred place
A sanctuary from the exhaustive pace
Some voice of reason to the rat race
A paradox to this time and space,
God reaches into to my troubled brain
Trying to push me into the slower lane
Keeps me from shouting out something profane
Shelter from the self-imposed pain.
