The three stories you are about to read are all true and take place in Boca Raton,Florida. If you didn't already know the city in which I reside was named by the Spanish. The name translates the “mouth of the Rat”.When ships would arrive to port hear the jagged rocks would cause accidents and mayhem. So the incidents I am about to tell you about will only prove things have not changed all that much.September 14th of 2004 my plane landed at Fort Lauderdale airport at 3:45 pm. Upon arrival my friend Dave and I grabbed our luggage and proceeded to the taxi stand where we hailed a cab to our final destination, Boca raton.We decided we would drop our things off at our apartment, shower and head out for some dinner.we departed the apartment about 5:00 pm to get on the road. Dave had his truck  already hear in Boca so we were set for transportation. We pulled out of our complex onto Federal highway. As we had just begun to pull out onto the highway I herd a load crash followed by a crushing impact from the rear of us.We had just been rear-ended , then plowed into the middle of the highway, opposing traffic was now trying to brake before hitting us head on. We hadn't been in Boca more than a couple hours and we were already in a near fatal car accident.Dave and I both sustained back and neck injuries, that still to this day bother me. We had both seen a chiropractor for 6 months for treatment. The Doctor could only do so much...long term pains ect, are a result you just have to deal with. I could no longer work in the field that I was currently employed in as a result. This had left me in a tight spot financially, being I couldn't work while I was recovering. After about a year I was hired at company with a great salary and benefits. Since money was tight that last year I bought a scooter to get around until I could afford a car. My first day of work came on a Monday so I took my lunch and jumped on my scooter to drive to work. It was 7:45 am and i was 10:00 min. from my new job.As I approached a busy intersection I had the green light, driving about 45mph. my eyes were on those drivers in front of me as well as those stopped at the traffic signal.When rolling on two wheels you have to be aware of everything around you, extra caution is self preservation.Just as I pass through the intersection I see two things, a police officer on a motorcycle stopped at he intersection.The second thing I see out of the corner of my left eye is a women probably around 60 years old with sandy blond hair driving a brown Toyota sedan, approaching the red light way to fast. In a flash she runs a standing red light and drives strait into me without braking at 50 mpr send me 20 feet into the air as if I was launched from a cannon. I then blacked out. I awoke in the Del Ray medical center. 24 hrs later,the police officer told me that he had seen the whole thing, he had to make the choice to chase her, or t bone the oncoming traffic and pull me to safety.Thank God he choose me. I had to have several surgeries to connect my arm to my shoulder. I have more hardware in my arms that was left on my scooter. I will never forget that ladies face that hit me only to run after ward. I wonder if at night when she's all alone, she thinks about what she did to me ,and how she could just leave me lying there. Because it was my first day at work my heath insurance wouldn't have kicked in till my 90 day probationary period was met, I was not insured. A long hospital stay, as well as multiple surgeries,I think I was into the hospital for over a hundred thousand dollars. Oh well thats a another story all together. The next accident,is far too common hear in Florida. I work as an Optometric specialist Monday through Friday for the past seven years. I see between 28 and 30 patients a day.I diagnose                                                                              and treat pts. with Macular degeneration as well as glaucoma AS WELL AS VISUAL FIELD EXAMS FOR “THE FLORIDA DRIVERS TEST”.When a person hits a certain age and their cataracts start growing the vision starts to dissipate. When a persons vision goes beyond 20/ 60, the DMV sends them a letter requiring them to have an eye exam. The public transportation availability hear is terrible compared to other cities. Also allot of the the times one of the spouses has died leaving the other alone to handle all of the responsibilities and very often trying to make ends meet on a fixed income. When a person fails the visual field test and their drivers license is revoked, they often put the car in a family members name and continue driving. Not only is this dangerous for the driver, but its a selfish decision that puts all of us at risk!  I have a patient   who's vision is 20/2400, so you understand this equation that means the person cant even see the big “E” clearly. She had her license revoked three years ago. S he was so upset she tried to bribe me. Next she demands a re-check. The patient was scheduled a re-check where is she went home and studied or memorized the eye chart.I knew she was going to attempt to answer based on memory at which time I presented a new chart. She leaves the office pissed off , with a failing letter. A few weeks later she tried to take the test in one of my sister offices, in approaching the office she drives her car into and through the front of our store. When the police came she had no valid drivers license, as well as no car  insurance. There was people injured as well as the reception area was trashed. WOW!!! Last but not least I am driving to my dry cleaners this morning, a lady in front of me on her cell phone has her right turn signal on makes a left onto a one way street, hits a police cruiser head on. Then puts the car in reverse races back and hits a man walking his dog. Instead of getting out of her car, she puts her window down and gives the guy she ran over the finger and  shouts something obscene. The police officer jumps out of his cruiser to help the guy she ran over. This guy was hurt bad, I jump out to help as she sped away. Its full contact driving down hear in South Florida.The good news is the cop got her license number. I lived in N.Y.C. and never saw stuff like this. I will continue to blog about these events ,for its through Blogging I find some sort of solace.
