How Little the Sacrifices of Our Forefathers are Appreciated Today on the 4th

In today’s currently distorted political atmosphere our Founding Fathers have been characterized as anything from rum runners to marijuana smokers, from slave owners to assassins of British office holders so that they were domestic terrorists as was taught by federal orientation of new federal employees under the Obama Administration. Just part of the disinformation campaign conducted by the left who, as Yuri Bezmenov, former KGB defector pointed out is part of the demoralization of a society under Soviet asymmetric warfare.  When a society disinherits its own past and culture it is rife for takeover.

Many people in the midst of their hot dogs, burgers, and beer on the 4th of July, don’t even realize that the 2nd Continental Congress drafted the Declaration of Independence more than a year after the battles that took place at Lexington and Concord the previous April. So, the 13 Colonies had been at war with the King George government for more than a year prior to the founding document of the new nation. Each man who signed the Declaration of Independence knew that he would be found guilty of treason by the British government and hanged if caught.

When King George received the Declaration of Independence sealed with a wax seal his legal staff quickly examined the document and were impressed as it was completely legal. The 13 Colonies were not as uneducated as the king’s court thought. It appeared that all was in order. Little do people know today the sacrifices suffered by many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. At least 5 of those members of the 2nd Continental Congress lost their entire estates burned down by British soldiers and confiscated by the Royal Crown. Every one of them lost family members to the fighting or who would be captured and executed. In a war that saw 2 million British infantry on American shores with only 2.2 hundred thousand Continental Army in opposition, odds were not in favor of the colonists though initially they did win several important victories.

The problem for the British was that they were in hostile territory with villages and townsfolk who would aid and abet the Americans and undermine the British when possible. Considering the land mass of the 13 Colonies it was impossible for the British to effectively move fast enough or in such great distances to hold down all territorial conquests and the keep supplied enough to counter an enemy that had superior knowledge of the terrain and had resources in their own land. The British were a formidable force to be reckoned with one on one so General George Washington’s used tactics of hit and run guerilla warfare took a toll on the British and undermined their morale.

The War of Independence was a war fought on many fronts and divided commands. At the lowest point of the war at Valley Forge, one of the most bitterly cold winters in memory, George Washington met with the ghost of an Indian Chief he had met at Battle of the Monongahela, July 9, 1755. Where his superior general Braddock was killed by Indians fighting with the French. He told him that Washington would win and the new nation would succeed. One of only many supernatural events that foretold the future at a time when the outlook didn’t seem too rosy. It is estimated by the beginning of the war that only 30% of the colonists supported it but as the British imposed harsh punishment upon the citizens of the 13 Colonies as retribution for their losses against the Continental Army that percentage quickly changed the minds of many English loyalists. George Washington only won 6 of 13 major battles he commanded in but the battles he won were the turning points of the war including Trenton, Boston, Harlem Heights, Princeton and Yorktown out of 15 engagements where he was the commanding officer. These victories would spell the end of the war for the British. Two additional battles under Washington's command were undecided.

An irony that lives to this day is the study by North Vietnamese generals during the Vietnam war of General Washington's guerilla tactics that so frustrated the British Army during the War of Independence that ended up being used against US forces in that costly conflict.
