If Only
I know you’ve heard it all before
Someone going through betrayal’s door
It makes you wonder what all the pain is for
You know a broken heart will shake you to the core,
With the illusion of a poet
If only I’d known it
I crystal haze fell on a delicate flower
Like my recollections both sweet and sour
Sitting lonely in the midnight hour
Like a spirit with magical powers,
Foolishly I believed in her based upon her words
Only to suffer the hazards
Feeling like my heart had been cut into thirds
Should have been looking forwards instead of backwards,
With the illusion of a poet
If only I’d known it
I keep making this future list
Hoping to once again be kissed
But somehow it seems the serpent has already hissed
I can see by the blood on my fist,
To think I brought this all upon me
Would never set me free
Trying just to get at the truth was never my cup of tea
Oh, Lord let me take a knee,
With the illusion of a poet
If only I’d known it.
