In The Absence of True Heroes
Twisted echoes all around
All those convoluted sounds
All those illusions of homeward bound
When the truth is nowhere to be found,
Oh my Darling take my hand
Together we'll go to the Promised Land
Where the flames of our passion will be fanned
Jilted again? Well I'll be damned,
Such is the life I did not plan
I’m awaiting the next information ban
The land of milk and honey becoming desert sand
How much more can I withstand?
If only I could read your mind
Doubtless I’d regret what I’d find
Discovering with who your lover last dined
Now that secrets are no longer confined,
What planet do they live on I’d ask
When you take the extremists to task
Were they really drinking from Dr. Jekyll’s flask?
Please, my Dear, remove that mask,
In all this, what does the future hold?
I’d like to think some of us would be so bold
But it seems all noble plans fold
In the absence of true heroes to behold,
Hope was once like a gold nugget in the ground
Easy enough to be uncovered and found
Where is that damsel in the flowing gown?
Dracula’s daughters emerging from the burial mound?
Once I had an untainted view
All possibilities weren’t considered to be askew
Plans for the future all shiny and new
New flesh for the ceremony right on cue,
Then the silver ship landed
And the savior Gods were heavy handed
The deadly blows that landed
Natives resented the fate they were handed,
In the aftermath I stand silent
The spirits who have passed on compliant
Finding impossible outcomes become defiant
Wondering if the Devil’s advocate is my client.
