OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says the federal government should look at stripping dual-nationals of their Canadian citizenship if they’re involved in terrorism or acts of war.
“I think that we should give consideration to this idea of revocation of citizenship, or at least ‘deemed renunciation of citizenship’ from dual-nationals of Canada who commit acts of war or crimes of terrorism,” Kenney said Wednesday.
The comments came one day after Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird confirmed a Canadian dual-national was involved in a deadly bus bombing Bulgaria last year.
The person, whose name has not been disclosed and who remains at large, is reported to have come to Canada and obtained his citizenship at a young age, before leaving when he was 12.
Kenney indicated the person has only been back to the country a handful of times since then.
