My Perpetual Friend
Always knew you'd never understand me
You sailing in your velvet sea
Always dressed so promiscuously
As if life were your own personal fantasy,
We're all riding on our egos so self righteously
But we're just injured ballplayers with a twisted knee
Wounded soldiers bleeding out slowly
Children living fearfully in an adult’s body,
Lonely heartbroken men spread across the land
Some trying to make their final stand
The truth has now become contraband
Too many today who can’t keep up with the demand,
You ask me what I am living for
I’m trying not to close the door
Seems like the attractive ones consider me a bore
Waiting for a letter in a bottle by the shore,
Every time life pulls away
Another pretty face just fades to gray
All the love I might have conveyed
Yet, it all somehow went astray,
Living long enough to carry on the fight
Without the arms that would hold me tight
Their teeth shine as if to define my plight
The unfaithful mistress always seemed so polite,
Betrayal, my perpetual friend
Don’t think I’ll find true love again
Here I sit with a poison pen
Echoes from some forbidden den,
“Take no prisoners,” so they say
As all hope fades away
The dreams of a nation end in dismay
All of us engulfed in life’s one act play,
Seeking dreams to escape in flight
Trying not to let the disappointments bite
Faith in the future so very slight
Love lost like a runaway kite,
Guinevere where have you gone?
These lonely nights live on and on
I chase the queen of slumber until dawn
Those impossible dreams to which I’m drawn.
