New Semi-Automatic Smart Rifle Turns Any Shooter Into a Pro
TrackingPoint, an Austin, Texas-based gun manufacturing company, recently revealed its latest product at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas: a semi-automatic rifle that allows even the most inexperienced user to shoot like a professional.
Called the 500 Series AR Smart rifle is a semi-automatic weapon that allows anyone to shoot, with uncanny accuracy.
The recently released rifles are being offered in 7.62, .300 BLK, and 5.56 calibers, and can mark targets within a 500-yard range and automatically shoot them. They can also track targets moving up to 10 mph, and allow rapid engagement, thus enabling the user to shoot multiple targets swiftly.
TrackingPoint is known as the creator of the first precision guided shooting system. It is famous for its groundbreaking Tag Track Xact (TTX) technology that uses jet-fighter technology to eliminate multiple sources of error and enables shooters to “narrow in” on targets at extreme ranges. The 500 Series AR Smart rifle makes use of this TTX technology, which allows it to track and hit moving targets. Once the user pulls the trigger, the gun decides when and where to shoot taking into account magnus, spin drift, temperature, muzzle velocity, barrel length and twist, Coriolis effect, position, distance to the target, and other factors.
According to Oren Schauble, the company’s marketing director, the rifle can provide five times the accuracy of an experienced shooter. TrackingPoint CEO John Lupher also said, “TrackingPoint is excited to be able to expand and adapt its TTX technology for the AR semi-automatic market. For the first time, AR enthusiasts will be able to make fast and accurate shots on moving targets up to five football fields away.”
This accuracy does not come cheap and the gun has a starting price of $9,950. Orders for the 500 Series semi-automatic AR products are currently being taken, but delivery won’t start till October 2014. People interested in buying the weapon can obtain an application that will determine whether they qualify to actually purchase the rifle.
Not everyone can buy this rifle – and for good reason. Customers interested in purchasing this gun will be subject to a background check. They are also required to provide regular performance feedback on the rifle to the company. This is because TrackingPoint, founded in 2011, wants a continuous stream of data and user input so that it can improve its weapon technology.
Besides target tracking and guided shooting, TrackingPoint also offers other features such as video capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity. Using these functions, hunters, who make up a large part of TrackingPoint’s clientele, can even record their hunting expeditions and share the footage on social media platforms. The 500 Series products also enable users to connect to a smartphone through the TrackingPoint app and record up to an hour of video footage
