"Not getting to the root of the problem seems to be the whole point of the mainstream news. At this point mainstream news consists of propaganda written by CIA agents, press releases from the govt, and CIA agents for journalists.
Govt knows it can't get to the root of anything. No politician has the time between cold call fund raising and meeting with special interest groups.
