BOSTON (AP) — The suspect in an Alabama university shooting once wrote an unpublished novel in which the main character, a female researcher, described how fulfilling it would be to get a permanent university job.
Authorities say Amy Bishop's real-life inability to get tenure at the University of Alabama in Huntsville may have played a role in the shooting that left three faculty members dead.
A friend says Bishop was frustrated about her battle for tenure, but never let on how furious she was.
Bishop is being held without bond on capital murder charges. Her attorney says she's remorseful but can't recall the shooting -- which is exactly what she told police after she fatally shot her brother in 1986, a killing that was ruled accidental.
