A New York City Subway train arrives at a station in Brooklyn, NY. (Shaun Ganley) NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a suicidal Manhattan college student caused a brief terror scare by carrying cyanide into a subway tunnel.
Track workers spotted the 20-year-old suspect early Friday in a tunnel under the East River. Police later discovered he was carrying a backpack holding a container of highly toxic sodium cyanide.
The NYPD initially suspected the man might have been part of a terror plot. But the suspect convinced investigators that he was planning to kill himself by swallowing the chemicals.
He was not immediately charged.
