The Eclipse of Memory
Going back in time seems it's always on my mind
Forever extracting truth from the bitter rind
Knowing there will be no answers there I'll ever find
Doesn't seem as though life has been unkind?
Romancing those rare sweet moments gone by
Purple winds ice cream on a slice of pie
The look of love in her eye
Fighting off the urge to cry,
The years are demanding and rough
Just as my expressions seem off the cuff
Didn't I love my family enough?
A world full of meaningless fluff,
It seems I've been reviled and exiled
To a dark corner where there are no gold coins piled
To a land of foolish experts all self styled
Forgive me for the excommunication in my file,
When we first met you put on your best act
Not too long before that mask you wore cracked
It was more of a transformation as a matter of fact
Like some message that had been hacked,
There was little consideration or mercy
Abandonment like sailors headed out to sea
Somehow I sensed there was little chance for me
Only the damning persistence of memory,
What we should have done and didn't do
Always there underneath hiding from view
Leaving wrinkles on your face that are new
Coloring your eyes to faded shades of blue,
Just as ancient men must have run
From the ominous eclipse of the sun
Just as we retreat from battles we never won
The vacuum left by the absence of a daughter or son,
The past as it revolves around the sun
It is ambivalent and answers to no one
Easy to feel in this day and age you're under the gun
The confessions the realizations but it's all done,
So many running from who they really are
Enveloped by a blackened night and single star
Wondering how many times did they go too far
Those persistent memories that leave scars.
