The Past Stares Back
Loneliness the ultimate humility
Isolation hacking away at your ability
What did you do to make it happen ultimately?
Now you are like a droplet in an infinite sea,
Looking in the mirror watching your life go by
Thinking of all you did to make others laugh or cry
How many times did you hear her sigh?
All you thought were family who said goodbye,
You can’t run away there’s no place to hide
Will life ahead just by a rough ride?
Or do you await the coming of a new tide?
Wishing there were an angel by your side,
Afternoon sky turns a deep blue
As you wonder just what exactly happened to you
The past stares back from a clandestine view
But loyalty and support came from too few,
Personal tragedies all too common place
Resulting from the pursuit of flesh and lace
You wonder if the failure was worth the cost of the chase
Somewhere along the line you just couldn’t keep pace,
The disappointment in those you thought would be there
We soon realize how little life is fair
Wishing for a time machine to escape the despair
Amazingly, those who should just don’t care,
You’re drowning in a wishing well
Victimized by the casting of an evil spell
There’s no way to hide within your shell
It seems fate cut the hose to your diving bell.
