The Soft Target
You came to me with a seamless heart
Seeking a tin soldier who could play the part
When it came to affairs I was never too smart
Looks like you found a soft target right from the start,
Those personal tragedies that mean so little to most
Until they become their own victimized host
Never able to walk in another man's shoes
Always easer for them to blame and accuse,
Of all the mistakes I take ownership of
Even being a walking wounded warrior of love
I thought that a mate was what dreams are made of
A companion to get through the push and the shove,
Then I found it was only the illusions I chased
Retreating from reality in such a great haste
Tormented by the flavor of your body I can still taste
Allowing the world to crush me into a bloody paste,
And those just like you who can leave with such ease
While depriving your lover with such an empty tease
So you grabbed the moment like it was yours to seize
You walked out on the only who cared to please,
I wish I was noble and free of all blame
I'm afraid it's my own integrity that I've stained
It seems by my own foolish deeds that I've been slain
As I look in the mirror at a pale face as the blood drains
I'm still alive should I even complain?
Had I lived a life that I could have restrained
Watching love escape like watching dried paint
Looking in the mirror at a face that might faint,
Should have lived my life more like a saint
A fool with memories that he alone would taint
Now there's no one here to share the complaint
These kinds of reflections will drive you insane,
You came to me with a hardened heart
Seeking a tin soldier who could play the part
When it came to affairs I was never too smart
Looks like you found a soft target right from the start.
