Severe storms and heavy rains have raced across the northern and central tiers of states during the past few days. The stormy period culminated yesterday with major windstorms clobbering the New Jersey – New York City area (Fig. 1). A severe thunderstorm ripped through New York City on Thursday afternoon bringing what may turn out to have been a rare tornado to the area. The storm caused extensive damage in Brooklyn and Queens and claimed the life of one woman. Striking just after 5:00pm local time the storm started with ominous clouds on the horizon and flashes of lightning. As it approached the boroughs the wind increased as did the rainfall. Severe storms rolled through New York City Thursday evening killing one person, damaging cars, downing several trees, and knocking power out to thousands. The New York City region had their second bought with severe weather this week. On Monday night, lightning delayed the Ravens football game with the Jets at the Meadonlands. There was a fast moving storm that hit New York in the late afternoon. There was a Tornado Warning posted until 6pm for Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens. By many accounts, there was a twister. Widespread damage in Queens and Brooklyn Thursday night was possibly caused by a tornado, as some residents claim they saw a funnel.Thursday afternoon, a line of storms gathered strength in New Jersey and headed eastward. A brief by severe storm hit not only Brooklyn Heights but the rest of Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island on Thursday evening. At 5:41 p.m a tornado warning was issued for Brooklyn and Queens. A mere 7 minutes later it was called off. However, the damage inflicted by the storm can only be described as devastation.The National Weather Service's Doppler Radar indicated a tornado touched down in Brooklyn or on/near Staten Island.
