Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new regional Covid lockdown order for Southern California that closes virtually all indoor businesses, except for approved big-box stores. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco called out Governor Newsom and said his department won’t be “blackmailed, bullied or used as muscle” against residents during the pandemic, despite Newsom’s threats to withhold federal and state funding from counties that do not enforce his orders. Sheriff Bianco said that Newsom’s “dictatorial attitude toward California residents while dining in luxury, traveling, keeping his business open, and sending his kids to in-person private schools,” was “extremely hypocritical.” Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said, “Compliance with health orders is a matter of personal responsibility and not a matter of law enforcement. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will remain consistent in our approach. Orange County Sheriff’s deputies will not be dispatched to, or respond to, calls for service to enforce compliance with face coverings, social gatherings, or stay-at-home only.” -GEG
A California sheriff on Saturday joined a growing list of law enforcement leaders in the state who refuse to enforce recent coronavirus orders.
Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes tweeted an announcement vowing not to send his deputies to enforce mask violations, “social gatherings or stay-at-home” violations. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom had issued a state-wide quarantine order for localities where intensive care unit capacity drops below 15%, according to the New York Times.
“Compliance with health orders is a matter of personal responsibility and not a matter of law enforcement,” Barnes said in the statement. “Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies will not be dispatched to, or respond to, calls for service to enforce compliance with face coverings, social gatherings or stay-at-home orders only.”
