Unique internet ID for all Americans

By Laura June, engadget.com

President Obama has signaled that he will give the United States Commerce Department the authority over a proposed national cybersecurity measure that would involve giving each American a unique online identity.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, speaking at an event at the Stanford Institute, stressed that the new system would not be akin to a national ID card, or a government controlled system, but that it would enhance security and reduce the need for people to memorize dozens of passwords online. Sorry, Locke, sounds like a national ID system to us.

STANFORD, Calif.--President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

The Obama administration is currently drafting what it's calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months.

Yes Leif, Comrade Clinton was not the first. The gov in my country has been trying since 1986 to implement the "Australia Card", but we keep telling them to f*ck off. Although in recent years they have in part, sneaked it in on minority groups that the general population doesn't care about. Indigenous people here, receiving welfare, need the card to go shopping and it dictates what they are permitted to purchase.
