70% of the earth’s surface is covered by ocean waters. Of that, scientists speculate that only .001% of the ocean floor has been explored and definitively observed by humans although modern sonar mapping has revealed 27%. This does not truly tell us what is down there, and what could possibly be gigantic predatory creatures we can only speculate about! Stories by commercial fishermen all over the world speak of Megalodon, an extinct giant white shark that devoured the largest dinosaurs swimming in the seas! For centuries stories of the Kraken, a giant squid or octopus, have been told where early ships such as galleons were attacked and sailors pulled under the waves.
Recently, there was a sighting and photo taken of a 27-foot-long white shark, thought by science to be impossible for modern day species of Great Whites! During the dive of a bathyscaph, the deep-water exploring vessel on its way into a Pacific trench that would have crushed any conventional Naval submarine, and during the descent, as the vessel was lowered into the depths, it was suddenly jolted! The two crewmen inside were alarmed and peered through a porthole into the darkened waters outside the hull. What they saw was a gargantuan eye of a creature so immense that they could not see the rest of the body. They speculated that it had been a colossal squid, but much larger than had ever been seen or recorded! Although they considered abandoning the mission and being pulled back up to the surface, they continued the rest of their dive luckily unmolested.
So, how does a US Naval Knox class 438 foot long submarine attack warship get severely damaged by an unknown marine creature that knocks out its complete sonar search instrumentation? While on a routine patrol sweeping the surrounding waters for foreign submarines, suddenly onboard electronics were literally knocked out! For all practical means and purposes, the warship was blinded over the very purpose it was intended for! The USS Stein, a US Navy Frigate, commissioned in 1978, was dealt a devastating blow, but the extent of the damage was not ascertained until their emergency course change to a dry dock revealed a clue to what happened!
The sonar scanning equipment is housed in a tear drop shaped enclosure below the nose of the ship underneath the hull. What they found was that it had met a sheer force unleashed from a biological source estimated to by 150 feet in length! The dome where the multi-million-dollar acoustic sonar equipment was housed was encased in a dense impact resistant rubber with a special polymer coating, but what was found after the USS Stein arrived for repairs. This dome had been shredded and the frigate rendered blind to subsurface contacts leaving the warship vulnerable to possible enemy subs!
Four-foot-long gashes, holes in the composite surface of the sonar dome were found by the repair crews. Then, once inside the sonar compartment, they found curved claws, characteristic of an cephalopod. These horned and boney curved claws had torn away to the outer covering of the sonar dome and destroyed the equipment! This was not a coral reef strike, or was it a collision with any other undersea object! The ship had been attacked! A lethal blow had been dealt by a huge sea creature that science would tell us is either unverified or shouldn’t exist at all! These huge, hooked claws could only be found on a colossal sized squid that would grapple with the blue whales, the largest known living animals on the face of the earth, deep below the darkened, cold waters of the sea. Nature proved on this occasion that even man’s most advanced systems in our time can be rendered into chaos by the unknown far below those mysterious waters of the Pacific where this incident took place.
