A vote on President Barack Obama's controversial judicial nominee is set for next week.

CBN News learned Friday that the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote May 21 on the confirmation of District Judge David Hamilton.

Hearings for Hamilton's approval began last month, and has sparked a great debate surrounding his background.

The Indiana judge gained criticism from conservatives, who labeled him an "extreme liberal" because of his connection with the American Civil Liberties Union, a group he once worked for that's been a strong supporter of gay rights and abortion.

Mat Staver of the conservative Liberty Cousel said his affiliation with the ACLU alone is enough to draw concern. He adds that he's also worried liberal picks like Hamilton will continue to come from President Obama's corner.

"This is the first nomination by President Obama," Staver said. "That is an even greater concern because it looks like these are the kind of individuals that he will be bringing forth as nominees to these federal benches."

Years ago, Hamilton also ruled that the Indian House of Representatives could not mention the name of Jesus in their legislative prayers. That decision has sparked concern from Christians, who fear he could rule against other religious rights issues.

Hamilton is being nominated to head the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
