Westchester 'firearm safety' claim shows media bias
* September 3rd, 2010 10:45 am ET
"Westchester gun owners take aim at county's firearm safety laws," the New York Daily News cautions.
"Westchester gun owners are balking at the county's firearm safety laws," reporter Abby Luby characterizes.
If we stipulate that a "firearm safety law" is one that will make the peaceable public safer, we need to establish the assumption that what's going on in Westchester does.
What is going on in Westchester?
"Scott Sommavilla, president of the Westchester County Firearm Owners Association, criticized police for using 'no-knock' (if need be) search warrants issued by local judges.
"The warrants allow police to enter homes - by force if needed - to verify weapons listed on permit applications are safely stored."
Forgive me if I argue that forcing someone to lock up their means of defense does not make a homeowner safer if they need to use their gun to stop a home invader.
Forgive me if I argue that sending in armed squads to kick down doors and hose down any home owner who might twitch the wrong way does not enhance public safety.
If these gun owners had not shown a willingness to obey laws by registering their guns and getting licenses/permits in the first place, the "Only Ones" wouldn't even know who to invade.
And the arrogance of the legislators in dismissing gun owner concerns is typical of those who perceive a lock on political power. Like all bullies, they love to rub it in the faces of those they lord over who may have the gall to protest their rule.
That government was established to secure the blessings of liberty does not factor into things with those who have discovered its power can also be used for personal benefit.
But imagining what the results of their edicts must look like through their eyes, I guess I can cede the "firearm safety" claim made by their "Authorized Journalist" media cheerleaders.
Criminals are made safer by these laws, as the government has mandated gun owners give them a head start advantage in any home invasion.
And cops are made safer, too. They can spend their time harassing people who have already jumped through all their damn hoops. That's a lot safer than going after sociopathic career predators who have no reservations about taking human life.
But what about those of us who object to being treated like criminals, and want to be able to repel or stop a threat if it crosses our threshold? Well, we don't matter, do we?
