'shuts itself off from the world'... how STS is that? Like an 'Iron Curtain' or that 'Wall' Israel is putting up.. containment field for their herd. Zombienation, perfect, is it not? Sort of like free fall, on Wall Street it's called a 'blow off' period or topping action.
Getting closer by the day.
I was in Boston and New York back in '94 and I was planning 2 more trips to the U.S. One tour of U.S.A. and another to California only. Unfortunately after 9/11 and the way things are today these trips will never be made. If only U.S. foreign policy had been different everything else would be too.
The truly scary thing about this article is that it describes behaviour of the authoritarian followers in Hitler's Nazi Germany. The very same people who are asking if a traveller was scared whilst travelling in ANOTHER country. I personally find these border 'guards' very scary.
Any suggestions Lisa on how we can change people ? Bobbie McNamara had said that the most difficult thing is to change a person's character. Also, ask any psychiatrist and he/she will tell you that you CAN'T change a persons character. Also a family friend who had traveled a lot had said that people are the same all over the world. So, I don't see how we can change people. What we can do in order for this world to be a better world is to find common ground and try to establish mutual agreement on most issues concerning humanity.

I think you have misinterpreted Lisa's words. It's not about changing people.
It's always very easy to recognise American tourists at airport terminals, etc. They move around in tight huddles, clutching onto their luggage for dear life, desperately trying not to make any eye-contact with "foreigners".
until that is what it is like for an American citizen to get out of the country? Oh wait, almost there, you can go but not with your money. Banks are refusing Americans everywhere because it is the only country on Earth that requires all banks on the planet to report American accounts. I wonder why? Maybe its the 600 trillion derivatives market.
Not only that but they own any income you make in other countries in their opinion. So you get lucky get out and get a job and pay your 30% to your foreign government..... you also owe the US their 30%. They own you. Oh yeah, by the way..... that isn't commonplace or even slightly normal. They own your wages, your assets, your bank account and your 401K when the time comes(derivatives collapse etc), which shouldn't be too far off now. Want to guess how they will justify it? They have to get the evil elite who are running with THEIR money..... oh wait.... that's how the income tax was sold and the elite don't pay it.... we do.
I had a similar experience to the author of this article, but it was at the airport in Amsterdam - go figure. I was laid over for 10 hours on my way back to the States from Tanzania where I'd gone to Dar Es Salaam and Kilimanjaro. I was traveling on a new passport so there wasn't a record in this book of other places I'd been over the years all over the Middle East and Asia among other places.
Anyone who's ever been in the airport in Amsterdam knows how much fun shopping can be there. I had a mission in mind to blow loads of $$$ at the Wolford store since I have a hard time in the States finding the styles and sizes I really like without having to mail order these items. After a successful afternoon of shopping and eating, I proceeded in the direction of my gate just to have 2 strapping, tall, aryan blonde gentlemen grab me from behind, call me by name, and tell me I had to come with them to answer some questions. Now, I am a 5'11" woman with shoulder length blonde hair who was in Columbia Expedition wear (I had just finished a Kili climb a day earlier) and did not look imposing in the least (maybe a bit grungy, but that was it). I told the gentlemen that I was an attorney in the States and a licensed Solicitor and would like to know why I was being detained and they told me that I wasn't being detained, just questioned at which point the one grabbed my bags out of my hand as the other one literally dragged me down the corridor against my will.
We got to a corridor with a door with a window and security lock. One guy put a code in and tried to get me to walk through at which point I fell to the floor and said I would not proceed any further unless they had a female officer present in the room with me. I made such a scene that all the travellers walking about started to take notice. Just then another male "officer" walked over, asked what was going on, and the non-abusing officer walked over and talked to him in a hushed manner. The new officer walked over to me, told me I could get up and that he'd walk me to my gate. I asked what was going on and he handed me my bags and motioned me to walk with him. I continued to babble about what was going on, how I was mistreated, and that I expect an apology and received a response that if I didn't want to be "suspect" perhaps I should avoid places where "terrorists thrive". I told him that I had only been to Tanzania and he said "this trip". We arrived at the "gate"/boarding area and he said that he'd wait with me until my plane was called and he did.
When I got back to the States, I tried to get answers from my govt as to what had happened. No one cared and one women said the same thing the jerk in Amsterdam said - essentially if you don't want to be treated like a terrorist, don't go to terrorist countries.
Oh, one more lovely event on the same trip. My connection back in the States was through Detroit. I spent the better part of a day there waiting for an early evening flight down to FL so I took a hotel room on airport and spent the better part of the day shopping & eating once again. When it was time to go to my gate, I had to go through security to get back to the actual terminal/gate area. Apparently the security had changed from earlier in the day - the earlier security staff actually being quite friendly and engaging in conversation with me as I had to go back and forth through security to go from the hotel area of the terminal to the shopping/gate area of the terminal. The new security looked at my boarding pass and passed it to a female who looked like Frankenstein's white mentally retarded 6 ft dykey female twin from the trailer park far away from the lab. The boarding pass had been printed in Kilimanjaro airport and said "Jambo" on it. She looks at me and tells me that my boarding pass is a fake because of the "Jambo" across the top of it. She was just about to really get animated as a lovely young clean cut, well spoken black security officer came over explaining to her that Jambo meant "hello" or "welcome" in Swahili and that it was a legitimate boarding pass to which she sniped "oh Swahili - one of those stupid terrorist languages". The gentleman rolled his eyes, passed me through, and that was that, but all I could think was how unfortunate it would be that this woman would be the first contact for many from abroad with an American and worse yet, how representative she was of so many Stateside ignoramuses.
Stupidity abounds on both sides of the pond, but I must say that the stupidity on the European side of the pond is performed with a bit more panache than in the US. Either way, it seems all of Western society is somewhere along the spectrum from Orwell to Hitler's Germany, which doesn't bode well for any of us.
Thanks for sharing this, it was an awful experience and I agree, it's the same just about everywhere.
Sorry for not being clear on the dates when my situations happened. This little story took place in 2005 and was just a glimpse of what was to come. By the time I stopped traveling in 2010, I'd had it being groped by TSA prior to getting out of this country let alone if I just wanted to fly 1000 miles in any direction domestically. A trip to "The Big Island" connecting back through San Jose cinched my disdain for flying altogether. Now, unless I can get somewhere by boat (e.g. the islands - I am in FL) or by auto, I just don't travel any more. Of course, driving is becoming interesting these days too with makeshift checkpoints, so.....
Dear Niels Gerson Lohman,
I understand that you may feel really hurt, it is a shame you couldn't make it to New Orleans but you may change your mind one day.
I had a problem in 2005 when I overstayed 1 week in San Francisco being a French citizen with american family I didn't think this was going to be a big problem. I was wrong. I had missed my plane to San Francisco from Miami a week earlier because of a hurricane.
When I arrive at the airport, I was taken to the immigration premises and I did feel very strange for they truly treated me like a criminal. Millions of questions that didn't seem to satisfy them even though I had no stamps on my passport or anything like that but my overstay of ONE week made me go through 5 hours of interrogation.
I realized that paranoia was very strong but was hurted to see the trouble they made me go through for nothing.
Now in 2013 and the world and people didn't get better, it's worse but there are some good reasons to that; everyday in the western world there are islamists terrorist attacks and a lot of them are not reported by the mainstream media. I have a friend who works under cover and one tenth is only told to the public but the situation is far worse than what most people think. A lot of terrorists seem to be ordinary people but with a hidden agenda and it is very hard nowadays to know who you are dealing with.
Unfortunately, some of the country you visited are muslim territories and you can't blame the authorities for freaking out. Even though, I understand for a honest citizen it is a trauma to be treated like that.
I sincerely hope you will be able to go to New Orleans one day when you get a new passport to celebrate your father's memory, a trumpet player, who loved New Orleans. There are still some nice people over there and I am sure you will overcome this humiliation even if you will never forget the way they treated you. I personally never went back since my father died and I am taking care of my mother who is sick but if I had to, I would go back. I still love some of the people and realize that you can't put everyone in the same basket. Best to you!
"Unfortunately, some of the country you visited are muslim territories and you can't blame the authorities for freaking out."
That's trained behavior, physical and mental.. to think of all of those not in their uniform as a potential 'enemy of the state'. Normally, this would be pointed out as bad for business, but then that depends upon what the nature of your business is and ours here in the States is no longer designed for small business, people friendly etc and we are doing a pretty good job of spreading our disease to all member states. Gotta get more stress out there or the sheep might begin to think they're free to do as they like.
Reminds me of that scene in the first Star Wars film... in the trash compactor as the walls start to compress them from all sides. Where's C3PO?
"A lot of terrorists seem to be ordinary people but with a hidden agenda and it is very hard nowadays to know who you are dealing with."
Dear system, do you know why? Because we, all ordinary people are considered potential terrorists by PTB who created this whole mess with our assistance in the form of not doing/not knowing enough in time and tolerating their actions.
Do you want to excuse the border officers for their behaviour? That is a blindness. They have chosen the job they are doing and they follow the rules. Perhaps they didn't know at the time of their choice what it will turn into nowadays but there is something called respect and grace which people with conscience have towards other beings. And once you have it you cannot carry on in a similar job for long while the rules are being changed into a Nazi-style orders. Unless you really blindly believe the BS about the war-on-terror and the need for protection against terrorists.
The only real terrorists are the ruling elite. Mass murderers.

"Like sheep being herded for market?"
No, not quite. More like they were about to embark on a Mission Impossible in VC country.
Total paranoia and xenophobia, basically.
What a pathetic tale. I wish I had the money to get out of this fascist, terrorist state.
When it gets bad enough, you won't care how much money you have. Really, money is secondary to your freedom and your life. You may at some time be forced to liquidate what little you have and just up and leave. There are usually other things preventing people from leaving though. Friends, family, obligations. The sticky things of modern life. The only question is, how bad is going to get before you decide enough is enough? Or will you miss the point at which it's too difficult to leave without a good excuse, then find yourself stuck?
In any case, I'm Canadian, and I used to travel to the States before 2000. Back then you didn't even need a passport, your Canadian driver's license was enough. Now, I refuse to fly there because of intrusive and possibly unhealthy security measures. But I got my passport, and maybe one day I'll take a bicycle trip across the border (I'm only about 100km away) and do some sightseeing and camping (there's some wonderful land in northern New York), but I fully expect everything I have to be sorted through with a fine toothed comb, and I'll pack accordingly. And, I will have a full itinerary and route plan, because the simple fact of not owning a car and having a bicycle trailer full of gear would be "interesting" enough for some guards to decide to give me the full treatment, I have little doubt.
skepticle has a very good point when it's said, "There are usually other things preventing people from leaving though. Friends, family, obligations. The sticky things of modern life." The thing is, when stuff starts to roll downhill, are you going to have time to measure and evaluate all these things? Those are major decisions, and they'll have to be made on the fly, unless they've been pondered and re-pondered until a clear path for each foreseeable eventuality is considered. Of course, the future is open, and not all possibilities can be known, but working out the details for -many- increases your odds of knowing what to do for the impending or current event.

America in its insanity shuts itself off from the world. In the forever war to defend the USA against future terrorists, everybody is a potential future terrorist and therefore suspect.
As I've said a bazillion and forty-two times, thousands of Americans are being paid to find and defeat those pesky future terrorists, and they will find them (or invent them) in order to justify their bonuses and awards and promotions.
Public Law 107-40 is still in effect, America is still trapped in the DAFT war (Defense against Future Terrorists).
Everybody has the potential for future violence, so everybody is a potential enemy, even the author, even me.
Woe is us.
