Not only do the American soldiers "guard" the poppy fields in Afghanistan but, American interest in Afghanistan has further increased with the discovery of huge reserves of valuable minerals in the country as a result of a survey conducted by US Geologists. In fact, as per conservative estimates, the value of the minerals - including lithium, iron, gold, niobium and cobalt - is valued at nearly US$ 1 trillion. The US study also found that Afghanistan's potential lithium deposits are as large of those of Bolivia, which currently has the world's largest known reserves of the lightweight metal. The Pentagon has even gone to the extent to declaring that Afghanistan has so much of the coveted metal that it could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium".
