Some of you may have heard about the "Boere Van Argentinië" ( the Afrikaans farmers who emigrated to Southern Argentina in 1903). 110 years ago they refused to live under British rule in the Cape. The Argentinian government offered them land in Patagonia, Argentina, and off they went. What they encountered there was hardship and more hardship in the icy Winters of the barren South.
Of course, I choose to believe that is the mate, introduced to them by the locals, that helped them to pull through in the end. The biggest sheep farms in Argentina are still owned by Boer descendants today. Here's a part of a documentary made in the 70's about this community by a few Afrikaans film-makers (in Afrikaans - baie ou Afrikaaans)...
