Chris - Virus = DNA (or RNA) core with protein shell. Retrovirus = Protein core with DNA (or RNA) shell. Evidence as infectious agent verified through millions of infection / transfection experiments. These things adapt, thus they fit the definition of life. Many genetic variations in seasonal flu, gives lie to "flu shots", as specific variants cannot be predicted. Much of our "junk DNA" is of "Human Endogenous RetroViruses", retroviruses that have incorporated into our somatic (hereditarily transferred) DNA. No whole HERV has been recovered from human DNA, however, it remains a concern.
