Remember the movie 'Flatliners'? I knew someone who's son tried to flatline but didn't make it back.  They found a paper he was writing for one of his college classes about flatlining and this was his experiment which went horribly wrong because he did it by himself without anyone to help him.

I too had a near death experience during a routine oral surgery.  I was suddenly awake and looking down at the surgeon and anesthesiologist and heard one of them say, "Oops, we're losing her."  Then they started running around and I was going towards the light but could still hear what they were saying...but then I woke up and was lying down.  I told them verbatim about the conversation they had and they just looked at each other and finally admitted there might have been a problem with the anesthesia.  Since I didn't get very far, I'm still not convinced of anything.  Guess I'll just have to wait and see - lol.
