Serratia has dark history in region - Army test in 1950 may have changed microbial ecology.
In 1950, government officials believed that serratia did not cause disease. That belief was later used as a justification for a secret post-World War II Army experiment that became a notorious disaster tale about the microbe - The Army used serratia to test whether enemy agents could launch a biological warfare attack on a port city such as San Francisco from a location miles offshore - For six days in late September 1950, a small military vessel near San Francisco sprayed a huge cloud of serratia particles into the air while the weather favored dispersal.

Operation LAC (Large Area Coverage), was a U.S. Army Chemical Corps operation which dispersed microscopic zinc cadmium sulfide (ZnCdS) particles over much of the United States. The purpose was to determine the dispersion and geographic range of biological or chemical agents.
The tests were designed to determine the dispersion and geographic range of biological or chemical agents.[3] Stations on the ground tracked the fluorescent zinc cadmium sulfide particles.[3] During the first test and subsequently, much of the material dispersed ended up being carried by winds into Canada.[4] However, as was the case in the first test, particles were detected up to 1,200 miles away from their drop point.[3][4] - The December 2, 1957 test was incomplete due to a mass of cold air coming down from Canada.[4] It carried the particles from their drop point and then took a turn northeast, taking most of the particles into Canada with it.

Although many of you may be aware that the UK Chemical and Biological warfare research centre, Porton Down, have in the past few years admitted to conducting some of their biological warfare (BW) experiments in public areas of the UK, the full extent of this type of research may come as a surprise.
To discover what prompted Porton Down to turn the UK into a giant laboratory for their experiments (trials) we have to go back to 1949 and examine what exactly it was that Porton Down scientists were doing in the Meadow Road area of Salisbury, the nearest city to their research centre.
