They (power companies) are saying that the fires likely were caused by a build up of dust on transformers that shorted out due to low-lying fog. To me, that doesn't make much sense (also because, it isn't the first time ever that such weather conditions prevailed).
I was also surprised to read that a similar incident happened in South Texas last month. In last month's incident, 18,000 families in Hidalgo, Starr, Cameron and Willacy counties lost power after numerous poles caught fire during foggy conditions on Nov. 16.
