The Seattle Police Department apologized Wednesday after a resident snapped a picture of an assault rifle left unattended on the trunk of a patrol car.
Nick Gonzales took the picture around 9 p.m. Monday when he says no officer was in sight of the car, according to 9 News.
A woman also reported seeing an officer later drive away with the rifle still on the trunk.
“It is unacceptable that a rifle was left unattended on a patrol car and people should expect more from their police department,” SPD Office of Professional Accountability said in a statement.

My a-hole cop neighbor left his car running for hours with his uniform, badge and gun on the back seat in plain sight for hours. The dog walker saw my light on and knocked on my door and asked what she should do. So I went with her and we turned off the motor, locked the car and left the keys on the doorstep with a note. He thanked us the next day and explained that he had started the car to make sure the battery was charged and then his sleeping pill kicked in and he forgot that the motor was running. About a month later someone broke into the car in the middle of the night, parked in front of his house, and took the service revolver and uniform from the trunk. Boy, he got in big trouble for leaving his gear in his car, lol.
