Stock Touters Prey on Inflation Fears, MarketWatch Exposes NIA

When an organization that says it's devoted to "preparing Americans for hyperinflation" also promotes penny stocks and Pink Sheets issues, that makes its picks suspect enough to be Chuck Jaffe's Stupid Investment of the Week. Jonathan Burton reports.

By Chuck Jaffe, MarketWatch

BOSTON (MarketWatch) — You’re scared about the dollar, soaring federal budget deficits, and the future of the country, worried that inflation will hit the American economy in historic ways. You’ve got visions of people needing wheelbarrows to hold the cash needed to buy a loaf of bread.

That’s where the National Inflation Association comes in.

An organization claiming to be “preparing Americans for hyperinflation,” the NIA (www.inflation.us) has a stated goal of helping “as many Americans as possible become aware of the disaster we are rapidly approaching.”

NIA — which maintains the tone of a non-profit or membership-supported group, although I could not find any research to support either position — producers editorial materials that speak the language of its supporters. From there, NIA makes the leap to helping like-minded investors find gold and silver stocks.

While the majority of NIA’s suggestions have been brand-name precious-metals companies from the major exchanges, the organization has spiced up its recommendations of late with penny stocks and issues trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange or on Pink Sheets.

In going that route, NIA turns affinity into a sham, because while it claims to look out for the interests of members (actually anyone who submits their e-mail address) its actions show its real affinity — stock promotion.

The top guys behind the NIA are stock jockeys, one of them being a notorious pump-and-dump schemer from the Internet bubble era. That makes all of the National Inflation Association’s stock picks suspect enough to be the Stupid Investment of the Week. MORE>>>
