ALL times is the time to be stocked up. Preparedness only works if you ALWAYS practice it.

In the mainstream media, TV shows, youtube videos, etc... there is a specific attitude and mentality being promoted regarding preparedness that frankly scares the hell out of me.  The mainstream portrays preparedness as an activity that crazy people engage in.  The mainstream shows the nuttiest people and filters and edits show content to portray those who engage in preparedness as loonies.  They even create fake reality shows like 'Utopia' to promote the meme of disfunctionality among those who seek a different way of living other than the hand-to-mouth/work-and-buy-things/depend-upon-society/everything -is-going-to-be-fine/nothing-ever-bad-happens type of existence we have today. 

At the same time, those who are shown preparing have this mentality of me-against-everyone-else.  They function under the premise of dog-eat-dog.  They buy lots of guns and build bug-out cabins in the woods and openly admit that they fully intend to shoot first and steal your stuff later.  This is the exact opposite attitude that we need to have.  It is the exact opposite reason why I personally engage in boyscout style preparedness.  I do it because if and when the power goes out and you can't buy groceries at the super market, I want to be able to continue to feed my family.  I want my loved one to be OK.  I don't want my friends and family to suffer because my country has been hijacked by grasshoppers* (From the Aesop's The Ant and the grasshopper).  I want to help my community.  I am very much aware that the vast majority of the people feel the same way.  It is primarily those in 'authority' who are pushing the destructive themes.

I strongly believe that we good people who have the foresight and the means need to take action.  We need to do the jobs that our government is supposed to be doing but aren't.  We need to be ready t stand up, step in and take charge during emergency events.  We need to have HAM and CB radios and have communication networks in place and have food stored and temporary shelters ready to go and volunteers to make it happen.  We need old style block leaders like they had during for air-raids in WWII.  We need volunteer citizens and business owners to put signs in their windows saying - 'Emergency Shelter' and 'Emergency Communications Center' and those people need to have 100 blankets and a ton of canned goods and 1000 gallons of bottled water and so on, on hand and ready at all times.

If nothing else, events like Hurricane Katrina have PROVED that our government is not 'Of, For and By' but instead 'me, mine, and my'.  We the People need to bypass official channels and take care of ourselves, our neighbors and our communities and each other.
