It will eventually erupt and it will affect life all over the planet as the ash goes up into the atmosphere causing volcanic winter and crops to die.  Whether or not it's in our lifetime or at some point in the future, you need a large population to assure that enough survive to keep the human race going.  As for the damage, this is right up there will a large asteroid impact.
