I would like to give the group a heads up to something that I believe may be a problem going forward with the Russian brokered agreement where Assad gives over his chemical weapons to UN specialists for inspection and destruction. In a WaPo article yesterday, it was revealed that at least France will demand the UN resolution creating the agreement must stipulate that the Syrian gov't/Assad was behind the attack on 8/21. If this is correct and if it actually ends up part of the resolution, it would establish as fact, in the absence of any fact-finding effort and against Assads consistent testimony as well as international consensus, that over 1400 Syrians died as a result of CW's used at the behest of Assads "regime." Keep in mind that this resolves the very issue cited by peoples the world over as their point of opposition to US strikes.
I can hardly imagine that Assad would agree to this. So going forward, while we may hear he is resisting or obstructing, or even reneging on his promise to enter into the agreement to turn over the CW's, if the stipulation is made part of the resolution, that may be an an issue for Assad and Russia, even if you hear nothing about it.
What we will hear much about is the provision that authorizes military force should Assad not comply. Ad nauseam. It is essential that every person and gov't that took issue with what could be known as fact, having already been established as part of the UN agreement, expect strikes upon Assads non-compliance. Details of who or how securing the CWs will happen as well as how compliance will be measured is yet unknown.
For me, the moment of relief that US strikes had been averted gave way to concern, admittedly untrusting of Obama's "reluctance" to enter into another conflict in the Middle East, that Assad will "withhold CWs and/or "order another attack." Which will necessitate US strikes per UN resolution as well as establish that Russia is inept or was in on it. And folks fall for it.
And remember- Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. :)

I'd have to agree with your view on this latest development. If indeed there's a caveat in the disarmament resolution which forces Assad to admit that he ordered the CW attack, he won't comply with it. This will give the US the casus belli to proceed with the much-anticipated military strike on Syria, while at the same time allowing Obama to save face.
After all the noisy saber-rattling the WH has done these past few weeks, I can't imagine they're actually going to abort the campaign and pursue an honest diplomatic solution--particularly since it was Russia that proposed it! There's something suspicious about this sudden change of heart, and this willingness to try Putin's plan. I can't help but smell another deceptive scheme brewing.
I really hope we're wrong... :/
I do, too. But my gut feeling tells me we're not.
