Watch Live Streaming Geminid Meteor Shower: 2012

Coincidentally, it seems there will be an excellent viewing oppo rtunity tonight for not one, but possibly two meteor showers. Including a yet un-named shower, possibly explaining the recent multiple spectacular meteor reports in the last day.

With recent reports about a few large meteors making the news before the scheduled peak of the Geminids shower, it might very well be indicative of an excellent show tonight. Even better - viewing conditions are forecast to be virtually ideal due to the current moon phase.

Skywatchers around the world are in for a treat tonight, as the annual Geminid meteor shower is poised to put on a spectacular show.

The Geminids will peak overnight tonight (Dec. 13) with the moon at its new phase. The skies will thus be free of the moon's glare, allowing viewers in rural areas to see perhaps 100 or more meteors per hour, experts say.

A new and as-yet unnamed meteor shower may also make an appearance tonight, ramping up the celestial display even further.

Best Astronomy Pictures of 2012 (24 Pics)

Australian based photographer Martin Pugh has claimed the top prize in the Royal Observatory’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition for the second time, after originally winning the accolade back in 2009. As well as securing the £1,500 top prize, his image takes pride of place in the exhibition of winning photographs opening at the Royal Observatory Greenwich on 20 September.
Pugh impressed the judges in this year’s competition with the depth and clarity of his winning shot depicting the famous Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

We watched them from the south shore of Long Island, NY between 8 and 11 PM and it was quite a show. We saw one huge meteor that was orange/yellow and was shaped like a shuttlecock! We saw dozens of meteors. A great show.

It is Friday 14 December here in Queensland Australia, last night (13th Dec, 2012) security guards at a regional site (Maryborough) observed a 6 hour display of meteors to the west north west of the town. In their words it was mesmerising.
