Austin, Texas Explores Photo Parking Snitch Tickets

11-11-2011  •  The Newspaper

Residents of Austin, Texas may soon have the power to issue parking tickets by taking a few photographs of someone else's car with their smartphones. A unanimous council voted on October 20 to explore the concept of deputizing vigilante meter maids using an iPhone app. Disabled advocates pushed the program at the council meeting in the hopes of guaranteeing easier parking. They were joined by others who were just interested in writing the $511 tickets.

The non-profit group Parking Mobility, created by George Soros-funded organizations, created the Android, Blackberry and iPhone parking ticket app which encourages cities to adopt the program because they can "generate revenue." The system requires a person take three photographs of the alleged violator -- one of the license plate, one of the windshield and one showing the car and the handicapped parking sign. The software sends the photos and the GPS location to the city so it can issue the expensive ticket.

Since  when  did  a  parking  ticket  cost  $511.00?   That  is  outrageous!!!   And  yes,  low  income  families  can't  afford  that  amount.  This  isn't  speeding  we're  talking  about  it's  a  Parking  Ticket.  Hanicapped  parking  is  just  what  it  says  on  the  pavement - Handicapped  Parking.  Any  one  without  a  big  sticker  in  the  wind  shield  should  be  ticketed,  but  that  cost  is  a  little  out  of  control;  don't  you  think?

Early proposals from Austin City Manager's office for the new photo informant parking enforcement and revenue collection program, reveal that volunteers will be known as 'Smartphone Ticket Application Sanctioned Informants'.

Those who sign up to the program and report more than 5 violations, will receive an official badge (pictured) and could qualify for financial bounties.

If the program proves successful, citizen volunteers could be entrusted with further revenue collection duties and 'community policing' of their fellow Austinites.
