Ed Klein's book "The Amateur" reveals a lot about the Obamas. Books can be sensationalized for the purposes of sales so I am always suspicious of what is in them.

But here you go.

Obama ran in a Democratic primary against Congressman Bobby Rush and lost 2-to-1. Michelle had discouraged Barack from running but he ran anyways and ran up a campaign debt.

This debt caused a rift in their marriage and Michelle drew up divorce papers. In fact, Michelle would not allow Barack to run for the Senate until this debt was cleared.
