An unresponsive twin-engine plane flying erratically over the Gulf of Mexico and tracked by the Air Force crashed. Rescue crews are on the scene. Authorities have not identified the pilot, thought to be the only one on the plane. An airport mechanic who has worked on the plane said the pilot was  Dr. Peter Hertzak, reports the Associated Press.

Bill Huete said Hertzak was a top-notch pilot. "He flew by the book and he didn't scrimp on maintenance," Huete said.
