FBI able to secretly turn on laptop cameras without triggering indicator light ‘for several years’

In a recent report by The Washington Post, it was revealed that the FBI has been able to secretly activate a target’s laptop camera “without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording” for several years.

While this may be surprising to some, it really shouldn’t be. Previous reports revealed that the FBI employs hackers to create software to remotely activate the microphones on laptops and cell phones as well as cameras. The U.S. government has also become the world’s largest buyer of malware. The NSA also recommended physically removing the webcam from Apple laptops for security reasons.

At the risk of possibly revealing my utter ignorance of electronic technology, I have been pondering over something: Could it not be possible that the FBI, NSA, or whoever, could somehow electronically tap into your TV monitor, even if your television is UNPLUGGED?  So that, they could watch you in your living room, or wherever you were somehow?

How can we know whether or not a device is installed, in all TV monitors, that allows them to access that monitor without the need of your TV being plugged in?  You don't need to plug your laptop in.  You don't need to plug your cellphone in, and its known that they can remotely track yo ass, via your cell phone.

I hear people say, "Make sure you unplug your TV, because you'll save electricity, as well as avoid being spied on.  Ha!!!  The only thing that stops them from TRULY spying on everyone are the following things:

1. Budgets
2. Not NEAR enough manpower

I learned that from an expert in the field.  But, what he SAYS that they do is SELECTIVELY monitor people, when they feel the "need" comes up.  They DO NOT have the budget, nor the manpower, to spy on every single person, every single day, 24/7.

But, they CAN, and do, monitor EVERYBODY, but not in the way that we think.  No one's SITTING there who has been specifically assign to watch YOU.  That's ridiculous.  They do what they've ALWAYS do, depending on the case.  When they want to ROUTINELY do what they call a "spot check," to see what an activist [or former activist] is doing, it is THEN that they can instantly plug in to the dude [or dudette], and gather information about what he or she is doing.

The danger, as we know, is the Hitler state or the Stalin state or any such state that has existed in human history, where evil [EVIL] men [MEN] get into positions of control that allow them to take advantage of the resources--in this case, technology--to effect their evil designs.

Black folks have LONG feared the use of this technology by white supremacists [and I ain't talking about the guys wearing the sheets.  I'm talking about the REAL white supremacists that currently have almost total control of the U.S. government] to organzie our GENOCIDE.  After all, U.S. society STILL, to this day, gathers statistics on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, WHATEVER.

In the wrong [WRONG] hands, the technology could be used to collect information, and that information could be use to create systems and techniques designed to slowly destroy black folks.  Paranoia?  Ha!!  If that's paranoia, then what do you call a "conspiracy theorists," who has been telling us FOR DECADES that all this shit that we now see being enacted was coming??

The "conspiracy theorists," whatever you wish to think about them, have proven themselves to be absolutely ON TARGET in their "paranoid" suspicious and speculations about where this country was going, and WHY.

This is why we all need to UNITE--not necessarily in some superstructure organization, but on PRINCIPLE and IMPLEMENTATION.  We can implement SIMPLE things: Stop buying shit that you DON'T need, and that makes THEM filthy rich, and that they will turn against us.

Stop joining the military, even it that means flipping burgers.  Have the self integrity to flip burgers, rather than be a mercenary for the monied elite [Recall Smedley Butler, and follows his example].  Do what Deep Space here said.  In short, REDUCE PARTICIPATION.  Some of ya'll don't like David Icke, but Icke says some good stuff.  He says to NOT participate.  There can be an ORGANIZED "not participating," and I guess that could be called a boycott.  Some don't like boycotts, stating that they hurt people.  I'm FOR boycotts, because they work.  Some folks can get hurt, monetarily, but the overall objective is always better [in my humble opinion]

You find out a company is doing some shit you don't like, STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS, and pass the word.  Make such thinking a ROUTINE part of your life.  I have never purchased a single thing from Walmart, despite its low prices.  Why?  Because Walmart is a low-down, dirty SCUM corporation that treats its employees like SHIT.  "But I can't afford to shop anywhere else."  Well, that's YOUR choice.  Walmart will NEVER get a penny of my dough, and I'm very proud that I never sunk so low as to puchase something from them.

If enough people stopped buying from them, you'd see some BIG changes in that company.  But, we're all sheeple, and just go along with whatever bullshit is dropped on us--unfortunately.  We won't fight back until they grind our noses into the dust. That's when we'll say, "enough is enough!"  It's a shame that it has to go that way, but that's how it will go: when they smash our heads into the concrete, THEN you'll see a Revolution.

They can remotely monitor (old school) television and computer screens from 50 meters away (a few years ago), probably closer to 150 meters today, without the TV or PC being online or network. The frequency that carries the Audio/Video to the display, through a cable, is wirelessly tappable. Thats the old school way though.

New school HDTV has wireless components built right in, with cameras and microphones.

Not surprised.  But I had speculated that they could somehow do this.  Interesting.  Well, it's too bad that we can't pay the GOOD nerds to block all their stuff.

That's exactly the problem, everybody wants their share of the money. Nothing is done because it is the right thing to do anymore. There always has to be a profit in one form or another such as fame and or wealth (usually) involved to motivate people to do the right things. The sad reality to this is, it would be the most profitable thing a person could do for himself and his country and it would make him famous for all time.

I guess you see the contradiction in your "...There always has to be a profit in one form or another such as fame and or wealth (usually) involved to motivate people to do the right things."

To me, doing the right thing, means just fucking doin' it, not for a buck or anythin'.

But, in these disgustingly, yet justifiably cynical times, I fully unnerstand why people need to be paid to do the right thing.

Problem always is though, that getting the money, or the new car, or a promotion, always adds up to their negative 'karma', and in the end, they are worse off for their demands for financial inspiration or reward.

No, this ain't news.

Anyone using the web, or any telephone, is naive to think they've had privacy - for generations.

And be sure the FBI aren't the only ones who can do this sort of thing.

Hacking is rampant in any middle-upper class dole bludgers home now, and crime gangs big and small see it as standard practice to just fuck things up, or to do the same to anyone who offends their minuscule mentalities and pride.

I've suspected as much for a few years, and know it goes on.  The best I bother doing is put tape over the laptop camera, knowing that the microphone is still susceptible.   But using Skype even rarely makes unsticking tape for the mike too much trouble.

And, for me, hey!  who gives a fuck if the fucking psychos in the NSA, CIA, MI6, ASIO [Astrayliar's spooks - real wannabe wankers] want to tune in?  I've absolutely nothing to hide, and they also know I would wipe the courtroom floor with them were they to falsify MORE charges against me.

BRING IT ON!  I tell 'em.

Also, as my Human Justice Advocacy, of GLOBAL LAND REDISTRIBUTION and REFORM of land use and land taxation, rah rah rah, is indisputable, Scientifically proven as indisputably CORRECT, in terms of any reforms the planet needs, after fighting the pieces of shit for about 30 years, after innumerable false arrests, deprivations, theft of possessions and rights, exile and now 18 years homelessness, 1, I got nothing to lose, and 2, have slowly turned the dicksuckers around to leaving me alone, because of the rectitude of my war against their egomania and upclub churchie SHIT.

[Sorry, sounds like I need a life.  CORRECT!]

But it still doesn't stop the small-beer crims-on-bikes acting like the idiots they usually are, and in-ter-fear-ing...

They'll get theirs.

But any who are shocked by your story about the FBI, is stupid.

But it does raise the question of whether everyone has to re-evaluate the whole scene, from using a phone to chat, to using the 'net to email WikiLeaks.

The major software and hardware corps - Microsoft, etc, are all guilty of letting these things happen, and of designing stuff so it's vulnerable.

As I harp on about, if we had JUST Laws, of distribution, we'd not need sneaks and secrets plans and all the BULLSHIT we, your Mr & Mrs Jo and Josephine Av'rage, have to adopt just to get on and get by in this thing called "life".

THAT's what any 'Revolution' stands or falls on/off of.

Ho-dee-ho....

O! and another way to rein in these psycho spooks, is to tax their masters, the religions.

computer law ..   484 ... check it out !!! ...  how many laws have they NOT broken ?? they were doing the tapping back in the 90's   check out what they did to catch   Electron and Nom  -"richard jones "  ( aussie hackers)   they passed laws  back in 1990's (had to be early 90's) ... Snowden blew the biggest whistle on it  and they still arguing if he "sold" secrets and not the shear volume of data he had ...  even Operation Snow white !! ....one of the biggest proofs of corruption ..

Their is nothing that can not be compromised .I just compromised you. nice porn by the way. I love redheads also.

Joke about redheads true blonde is the go.

This sounds like a good tip.. Thanks DS.
By the way... if an organization is smart enough to hack personal electronic devices (including programable ones like a computer), it seems to me they have enough smarts to remotely alter driver settings and even toggle the settings so you may never know they were there. In the world of big system computing, there are generally logs kept of files updated. This is missing from personal computer operating systems and both the control and the logs are not included in cell phone OS's.
As a result, I use the fix offered by mystery... cover the camera with a sticker, bandaid or non transparent tape. I don't have a fix for the mic... but my suggestion is to consider any mic an open mic and just as if it were a stranger sitting right beside you. Don't say stuff that you would not want to have to explain away at some point.

You can also uninstall the mic driver completely if it's separate from the sound driver. Of course you can uninstall it if it's not separate too, but then you'd have no sound.

I'd like to see a List of all the consumer products that have surveillance equipment in them.
