This weekend America witnessed a limited crash in the computer systems that manage electronic benefit transfers across the country. Within hours of the crash panicked food stamp recipients who were left with no way to feed their families rushed grocery store shelves to obtain everything they could while the system was down.
The outage lasted less than a day, but it proved what many already knew, that America had become a nation so dependent on government subsidies that any glitch in the system could lead to total pandemonium.
But if you thought that isolated incident was bad, imagine what could happen next month.
We say next month because the USDA, which oversees the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), has just issued an order to SNAP agency directors calling for their respective States to implement an emergency contingency program because of government funding issues. In a letter obtained by the Crossroads Urban Center food pantry, the USDA is directing state agencies to, “delay their November issuance files and delay transmission to State Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) vendors until further notice.”
What this means is that should Congress fail to increase the debt ceiling this week, come November there will literally be millions of people in the United States who will have exactly zero dollars transferred to their EBT cards.
What will happen to the nearly 50 million people who depend on these benefits to survive?

An EBT card user interviewed in the video above (2 minutes 30) comments, “They better resolve something because if it stays like this there’s gonna be an uproar in the city of L.A.” When the man is asked to clarify, he respond, “A Rodney King baby!”
The man is referring to the 1992 L.A. riots, spurred by the Rodney King beating, which resulted in 53 deaths, 2,000 injuries and over $1 billion dollars in property damages.

The Answer To 1984 Is $19.95
Now that was a good one! :)
No Way! ;)
According to ABC, the glitch removed the limits on cards, allowing EBT users to purchase 8-10 grocery carts of food.
They are supposed to have a $50 limit.
The shopping frenzy was triggered when the Electronic Benefits Transfer system went down because a back-up generator failed at 11 a.m. EST Saturday during a regularly-scheduled test, according to Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system and based in Norwalk, Conn. The outage erased limits on the EBT cards.

The food-stamp system crash didn't prevent them from buying, it allowed them to buy with no limit. If they stop the food stamps, its to kill off the population. Until then, these people are meatshields.
Thank you. I hadn't thought about it like that.
After the scare wears off, these are going to be angry people!!!

Personally? I do believe they do need to go back to the way it was about 1983.
IF you had a car, you couldn't get food stamps. They figure if you wanted food, you'd go to work and buy your own food.
Then it changed to IF you had a car (I forget how old or new)...but if it was within 5 yrs old, you didn't get food stamps.
Now? Those people drive up to the food stamp office in brand new cars. And, their kids are NOT wearing rags.
